The Hunt Begins

"What do you plan to do?" Sadie asked quietly.

"Simple," Seraph replied, voice low and cold. "I'll find it, and I'll kill it."

Beside him, Tetraites bowed his head.

The crowd pressed closer, members of Prometheus Rising marked by their gray-and-black armbands. Among them stood the changed ones, those whose bodies had been transformed by surviving the dungeon's earliest trials.

A woman with feline ears.

A man whose forearms were covered in scales, another still a full minotaur. Paul pushed through to the front, and behind him came the General, looking for answers.

"We're ending this tonight," Seraph said, his voice carrying a deadly calm. "Tetraites, assemble the best of your undead, put the rest on the walls."

The skeletal champion inclined his skull. "Yes, Lord November."

Paul stepped forward, fists clenched tight. "I'm coming too."

Seraph studied his father's face. "No, you'll stay behind. You remain second in command, remember?"

Seraph could see the stubborn set of Paul's jaw, the same expression he'd worn countless times in another timeline when arguing about Luca's safety.

The memory stirred something in him. Paul had always tried to protect him, even when it meant throwing himself between Luca and danger. But this wasn't that time, and Seraph wasn't that child. That child had been given a second chance.

Behind Paul, Seraph noticed the General's pale face.

Seraph turned to face General Hayworth, noting how the man's military bearing wavered under his gaze.

"Whatever your plans, I suggest at least staying the night," Seraph said. "Paul will make sure you and yours are well taken care of. I have a hunt."

With John's corpse already cooling, Seraph needed to act immediately to end the threat outside the walls.

Paul stepped forward, professional mask sliding into place. The same expression he'd worn in board meetings before the world changed.

At least some skills transferred well to the apocalypse.

Seraph watched the General's gaze dart between them, calculating odds and outcomes.

Smart man.

The military hadn't survived this long by being reckless. Still, Seraph could practically see the moment Hayworth decided to accept the offer, shoulders dropping a fraction of an inch.

The transformation of the mall into Last Home had given Seraph an awareness of everything within his domain. He felt Tetraites' skeletal warriors taking positions along the walls, sensed Sadie moving around the crowd to keep eyes on the military group. Even the elves' hidden gathering tended to register.

But this creature had gone unnoticed again, and had killed one of his own.

Seraph watched Garen approach with his elven scouts. The elf's face remained impassive, masking the hatred Seraph knew lurked beneath.

In another life, Seraph had slaughtered Garen's people without mercy. Now they worked together, bound by necessity through the dungeon rather than trust.

The elves spread out in a defensive formation, their bows and blades in hand. Each warrior bore the marks of survival. These were not the usual elves that manned the shops of Last Home.

Garen gave a curt nod as they approached.

"Everyone, gather by the armory," Seraph said, his voice carrying across the courtyard. "We leave in ten minutes."

Seraph watched the gathered forces by the armory, feeling the weight of command settle over him once more.
